Amazon is abandoning its proprietary Fire OS for Android in a significant pivot for its tablet division. Codenamed "Kittyhawk," the new high-end Fire tablet—priced around $400—marks a departure from Amazon's traditional reliance on in-house software. The MOVE addresses longstanding developer frustrations over app compatibility and consumer demand for full Play Store access.

Fire tablets have historically captured 8% of the global market through aggressive cost leadership, often selling near production costs. Yet the ecosystem's limitations became increasingly untenable as Apple (33.1% share) and Samsung (18.7%) dominated with robust app libraries. "The walled garden approach created unnecessary friction," said IDC researcher Jitesh Ubrani, noting developers balked at maintaining separate app versions for Amazon's siloed platform.

This strategic concession to Android reflects broader tech industry realities—even giants like Amazon must occasionally surrender control to remain competitive. The premium pricing of the new model suggests ambitions to compete beyond the budget segment, though it remains to be seen whether consumers will embrace Fire devices at near-iPad price points.
